On a drywall wall, the mount screws into wooden studs (or steel studs with the right hardware). A masonry wall has no studs — the wall itself is the structure, and the fasteners go directly into the concrete or block. That changes the tools, the hardware, and the technique:
- You need a hammer drill. A standard drill spins; a hammer drill hammers while it spins, which is what lets a carbide bit chew through concrete. A regular drill bit won't cut it — it dulls fast and overheats, and the hole never gets deep enough.
- Carbide-tipped masonry bits only. Masonry bits have a carbide tip that grinds the concrete instead of cutting it. Bit diameter has to match the anchor exactly — too small and the anchor won't seat, too big and it won't grip.
- Anchors, not screws. You can't drive a wood screw into concrete. Masonry anchors — screws made for masonry, or expansion anchors that wedge themselves into the hole — are what carry the load.
- Dust is part of the job. Drilling concrete produces a steady stream of fine dust. We use dust collection on the drill and cover the area, so the job doesn't end with a gray film over the whole room.
Solid Concrete vs. Concrete Block: Know Your Wall
The single most important question before any masonry mount is what's actually behind the TV. The two main materials behave differently and take different anchors:
- Poured concrete — solid and dense. You'll find it in basement foundation walls and some garage and utility walls. There's material everywhere behind the surface, so almost any masonry anchor works, and the holding power is excellent.
- Concrete block (CMU) — the familiar gray blocks with hollow cores. The blocks have thin face shells on the outside and solid vertical webs of material every few inches. Garages, partitions, and many basement walls are block. Fasteners either need to bite into that solid web, or use anchors designed to expand inside the hollow cell.
How can you tell which one you have? Block walls show a grid of mortar joints between blocks; poured concrete is one continuous surface, sometimes with faint horizontal form lines. If you're not sure, we check by tapping and by the drilling behavior — concrete and block feel different under the bit.
The Right Anchors for Each Wall
Matching the anchor to the wall is what keeps a TV on the wall for years instead of weeks:
- Masonry screws (Tapcon-style) for solid concrete. These thread into a precisely sized pilot hole and are the workhorse for most TV mounts. They're clean, removable, and rated well above the weight of a TV and mount when the right length and diameter are used.
- Expansion anchors for heavier loads. Sleeve and wedge anchors expand against the sides of the hole. We use them where the load is higher or the mounting points are fewer than we'd like.
- Hollow-block anchors for CMU. In a block wall, the strongest attachment is into the solid web of the block. Where the mount's holes don't line up with a web, we use anchors that expand inside the hollow cell and grip from behind the face shell. The thin shell alone is never the load-bearing surface.
The weight rating on the anchor package matters more than the rating on the mount. The mount is rated for the TV; the anchors are what actually hold the whole assembly to the wall.
How We Drill and Set Fasteners on Masonry
Drilling into concrete isn't hard, but it is unforgiving of shortcuts. Here's the process we run on every masonry mount:
- Mark and check first. The mount position is confirmed level and centered before the first hole — same as any wall — and we check that no plumbing, electrical, or rebar is likely to be in the drilling zone. On a basement wall, that means keeping an eye out for embedded conduit and water lines.
- Drill to the right depth. The hole gets drilled slightly deeper than the anchor length, so the anchor seats fully without bottoming out.
- Clear the dust. Concrete dust packs into the bottom of the hole and stops the anchor from gripping. We blow the hole out before setting each fastener.
- Keep fasteners away from edges. Masonry is strongest away from its edges and corners. We keep mounting points well inside the solid material — never in a broken corner or right at a block's edge.
- If you hit rebar, stop. Poured foundation walls sometimes hide rebar. Forcing a bit through it ruins the bit and the hole. The right move is to shift the mount slightly and drill a fresh hole.
For a fixed or tilting mount, four solid anchor points carry a TV easily on masonry. For a full-motion mount, we use more points and anchors rated above the combined weight of the arm and TV — the arm multiplies the leverage on the wall, and masonry handles it fine when the anchors are sized for it.
Wiring on a Concrete or Block Wall
The one place masonry walls genuinely limit you is cable concealment. A drywall wall has a cavity you can route wires through; a concrete or block wall doesn't. That changes the clean-wiring playbook:
- Surface raceway. A slim, paintable channel carries the cables down the wall and along the baseboard. It's the standard solution on masonry, and finished well it's nearly invisible — especially if it's painted to match the wall.
- Powerline networking. If the TV needs an internet connection and there's no good path for a network cable, a powerline adapter ($99 add-on) runs the network over the home's existing electrical wiring. Chimney Chases and Odd Walls
Some of the masonry we mount on isn't a basement wall at all.
