TV Mounting on Stone and Stacked Stone Walls in Lexington, KY
Stone is everywhere in Lexington living rooms right now. Stacked ledger stone up a fireplace chase, cultured stone across a basement bar wall, real limestone in an older house near downtown. It photographs beautifully, and it is the wall people most want the television on.
It is also the wall where the answer depends almost entirely on how the stone was installed — and that is not something you can tell by looking at the face of it. Here is what changes, and what we work out before the drill comes anywhere near it.

These are two genuinely different jobs wearing the same finish, and telling them apart is the first thing that has to happen.
Full-depth stone — real or cultured units several inches thick, laid up as masonry — is structural in its own right. Anchors set into it hold well, and the wall behaves much like brick. Older Lexington homes and true masonry fireplaces are usually this.
Thin veneer is a facing roughly an inch thick, adhered with mortar over a scratch coat, metal lath and a moisture barrier, on top of either sheathing and studs or a block wall. Nearly every stacked-stone accent wall built in the last fifteen years is this. It is strong in compression and weak in tension, which is exactly the wrong way round for hanging weight off it: the risk is not the stone crushing, it is a piece pulling away from the lath.
A visible edge helps — at a corner, a return, or where the stone meets trim — and so does tapping across the face, since veneer over wood framing sounds noticeably different from solid masonry. When it is genuinely unclear, we treat it as veneer, because that assumption is the safe one.
2. What the Stone Is Attached To
On a veneer wall the anchors are not really holding the stone; they are passing through it into whatever is behind. So the build-up decides the hardware:
- Veneer over sheathing and wood studs. Very common on a fireplace chase or accent wall. The load goes into the studs with long lag bolts, and the stone is just thickness to get through.
- Veneer over concrete block. Frequent in basements. Sleeve or wedge anchors into the block, placed in the solid web rather than a hollow cell.
- Veneer over poured concrete. The strongest case, and the one that is least fussy about where the holes land.
- Full-depth masonry. Anchors into the stone or the joints, sized to the unit and set at a sensible distance from any edge.
Stud finders are close to useless through an inch of mortar and stone over lath. What does work is reasoning from the structure: the chase framing, the firebox opening, the mantel fasteners, outlet boxes and the corners all reveal where framing runs, and confirming from an adjacent unfinished surface — the back of the chase, the basement side, the attic above — is worth the five minutes.
3. Drilling: Stone, Joint, or Neither
On brick there is a well-known preference for drilling the mortar joints, because they are easier to repair and easier on bits. Stacked stone is not so simple. Ledger stone joints are often thin, irregular, or barely there, and the mortar between pieces of thin veneer is not a structural bed the way a brick joint is.
So the placement rule on veneer is about what is behind the hole, not what is in front of it: the fastener needs to land in framing, block web or concrete, and the stone face gets drilled wherever that requires. A masonry bit on a hammer drill, started slowly so the bit does not skate and chip the face, through the flattest part of a unit rather than near an edge or a corner where it will spall.
Two practical notes. Stone dust is fine, gray and travels, so a vacuum at the bit and drop cloths are not optional in a finished room. And holes in stone are permanent in a way that holes in drywall are not — there is no patch and paint here, which is the real reason we measure the layout twice and drill as few holes as the mount allows.
4. Height, the Fireplace, and Heat
Most stone walls in Lexington homes have a fireplace in them, and that puts two constraints on the install at once.
The first is viewing angle. A TV placed above a mantel sits higher than the ideal seated eye line, and the taller the stone surround, the worse it gets. A tilting mount adds $45 at any size and is the single most useful upgrade on a fireplace wall, because angling the screen down recovers most of what the height costs you. The second is heat. A working fireplace sends warm air up the face of the stone, and electronics do not enjoy sitting in it. Mantels help by deflecting the rise, and the clearance above the firebox matters, so it is worth running the fireplace and feeling the wall where the TV would go before committing. On a decorative or electric unit this is not a concern at all.
5. Cables on a Wall You Cannot Open Up
This is where a stone wall differs most from every other surface, and where the planning has to happen first rather than last. On drywall you cut two openings and drop the wire. On stone you are not cutting an opening, and behind veneer there is frequently no open cavity to drop anything into.
The options, in the order we usually suggest them:
- An outlet and low-voltage plate before the stone goes up. The best answer by far, if the wall is not built yet or is being redone — and a reason to call during a remodel rather than after.
- Power behind the TV. A new outlet is $150, and where it can be reached from behind the chase or from the room next door it gives a completely clean face with only a plate showing.
- Concealment down the face. Powerline concealment is $99, running the cord in a finished channel. On a stone wall this can often follow a vertical joint line or a corner return, and it is far tidier than the alternative.
- Around rather than through. Routing along the top of a mantel, behind a shelf or into an adjacent cabinet, which on a stone chase is sometimes the shortest honest path.

6. Choosing the Mount
Mount choice matters more on stone than on drywall, because every hole is permanent and an extended arm multiplies the load at the plate.
A fixed mount is the least demanding and keeps the screen tight to the wall — a good fit when the height is already right. A tilting mount at $45 is the usual pick above a fireplace. A full-motion mount is $125 and available on 32-inch through 55-inch TVs only as a special order; on thin veneer it is the option that most needs the fasteners to be landing in real framing, block or concrete, because the leverage at full extension is considerable.
Mounting prices go by screen size — 43-inch is $99, 55-inch is $119, 65-inch is $139, 75-inch is $179, 85-inch is $219 — and the wall type does not change the base price. Soundbar mounting is $40, and on stone it is worth deciding up front so the whole layout is drilled once rather than twice. Smart TV setup is $35, and old TV removal is $30 if a previous set is coming off the wall.
A Short Checklist Before We Arrive
- If you know whether the stone is thin veneer or full-depth masonry, say so — and if you do not, that is fine, we will work it out.
- Note what is behind the wall: studs, block, poured concrete, or a fireplace chase.

- Pick the height sitting where you actually watch, not standing at the wall.
- Plan power early: a new outlet, or concealment down the face.
