TV Mounting on Shiplap and Wood Accent Walls in Lexington, KY
Wood accent walls have taken over the feature wall in Lexington homes — shiplap in a living room, board and batten behind the sofa, tongue and groove in a finished basement, reclaimed barn wood in a bar room. In almost every case, the TV is going in the middle of it.
Mounting on wood is not harder than mounting on drywall. It is just different in ways that matter, and the mistakes are more expensive because you cannot patch and paint a mistake out of stained wood. Here is what actually changes.

This is the whole thing in one sentence: shiplap is a finish, not a structure. Quarter-inch or three-quarter-inch boards nailed to a surface will hold a picture frame and nothing heavier. Whatever the TV weighs has to end up carried by the framing behind the boards, and the boards are simply something the mount has to reach through.
What is behind them varies more than people expect, and it decides the whole job:
- Boards over drywall over studs. The most common build in a recently updated Lexington home. You are now reaching through three-quarters of an inch of wood plus half an inch of drywall before you hit framing.
- Boards nailed directly to studs. Common in basements, additions and DIY accent walls. Simpler, and the fasteners are shorter, but there is no drywall layer to help spread the load.
- Boards over furring strips. Thin strips run across the wall to level it, with boards on top. This leaves an air gap, and a mount tightened down over a gap will flex and pull the boards.
- Boards over block or masonry. Turns up in basements and older homes near downtown. Now it is a masonry job with a wood face, which changes the anchors entirely.
None of these is a problem. Guessing which one you have is the problem.
2. Finding Studs Through Layers of Wood
A magnetic or electronic stud finder that works fine on bare drywall gets unreliable over a wood layer. Density changes, nails and staples every few inches give false readings, and a thicker board pushes the sensor out of range. Do not drill on the first beep.
The nail pattern in the boards is usually the best clue you have. Installers nail into framing, so a vertical line of filled nail holes is very likely a stud — look down the wall in raking light and the pattern shows up. Corners, window edges and outlet boxes give you a known reference to measure from, and framing on sixteen or twenty-four inch centers does the rest. Confirming with a small probe hole in an inconspicuous spot is far cheaper than a mount that pulls out.
If you cannot confirm solid framing, you either move the TV or add a backer. What you do not do is trust a hollow-wall anchor set into decorative boards.
3. Longer Fasteners, and a Plate That Sits Flat
Two mechanical details separate a wood-wall mount that lasts from one that loosens up.
The lag bolts have to be longer. The hardware in the box is sized for drywall over studs. Add a wood layer and every bolt loses that much thread depth in the framing, which is exactly where the strength comes from. The bolts have to be long enough to pass through the wood, the drywall if it is there, and still bite deep into the stud.
The plate has to sit on something solid and flat. Shiplap has a shadow gap between boards, board and batten has raised trim, and reclaimed wood is deliberately uneven. A mount plate spanning a groove or a batten sits on two high spots and rocks, and any cantilever load will crush the wood at those points. The fix is spacers or blocking behind the plate so it bears evenly, or a solid backer board.
On a heavy TV, or where the framing does not line up with where the TV needs to be, a piece of plywood lagged across two or three studs and finished to match the wall is the honest answer. It looks intentional, it spreads the load, and it gives you freedom on placement.
4. Wood Splits. Pilot Holes Do Not Have Feelings.
Softwood boards split, especially pine shiplap, thin tongue and groove, and dry reclaimed lumber. Every fastener through a finished board wants a properly sized pilot hole, drilled square to the face. Driving a lag straight into pine near a board edge is how you get a crack running the length of the board, and there is no filling that in a stained wall.
Two other habits matter here. Stop tightening when the plate is snug — over-torquing into wood crushes the fibers and leaves a joint that works loose. And keep fasteners away from the last inch of a board edge or end, where splitting starts. On a painted wall a mistake is a caulk-and-touch-up; on stained or sealed wood it is permanent, which is why we drill fewer, better holes.
5. Cables Are the Part People Do Not Plan
On drywall, hiding cables is routine: cut two boxes, drop the wire, close it up. A wood wall changes that. Cutting a clean rectangular opening in shiplap without splitting a board is fussy work, the low-voltage brackets that hold a plate in place need a specific thickness of material to clamp to, and with furring strips behind the boards there may be no open cavity to drop a wire into at all.
There are two dependable answers. Adding a new outlet behind the TV is $150 and puts power where the TV is with nothing visible at all — on a wood wall this is usually the cleanest route, because the work happens behind the boards and only the plate shows. Where a new circuit is not practical, powerline concealment is $99 and runs the cord in a finished channel down the wall. On a vertical board and batten wall, that channel can often follow a batten line and nearly disappear.

6. Picking the Mount for a Wood Wall
Mount choice interacts with the wall more here than anywhere else, because everything the mount does mechanically ends up as load on those boards.
A fixed mount holds the TV closest to the wall and puts the least strain on it, which is why it is often the right answer on a feature wall where the TV is at the height you want. A tilting mount adds $45 at any size and is worth it whenever the screen sits high — over a fireplace, in a basement with a soffit, or above a console. A full-motion mount is $125 and available on 32-inch through 55-inch TVs only as a special order; it is the most demanding option on any wall, because an extended arm multiplies the load at the plate. On a decorative wood wall that is exactly the case where blocking or a plywood backer stops being optional.

A Short Checklist Before We Arrive
- Know how the wall was built, if you can — boards over drywall, over studs, over furring, or over block.
- Note the board thickness and whether the surface is flat or has battens and gaps.
- Look for the nail lines; they tell both of us where the framing is.
- Decide the height by sitting where you actually watch, not by standing at the wall.
- Say whether the wood is painted, stained or sealed — it changes how we treat every hole.
- Plan power: a new outlet behind the TV, or concealment down to an existing one.
- Mention a soundbar now if one is coming, so the layout is planned once.
A TV on a wood accent wall is one of the best-looking installs in a house, and it is completely routine work as long as the load ends up in the framing and the plate sits flat. The decisions that matter all happen before the drill comes out.
