Harrodsburg is Kentucky's first town — Fort Harrod was built here in 1774, and the settlement that grew around it is the oldest permanent one in the state. A few miles away, Shaker Village of Pleasant Hill preserves what is now America's largest restored Shaker community, with more than thirty restored buildings on thousands of acres. That history is not a museum exhibit here; it's the housing stock. Plenty of Harrodsburg homes are genuinely old, and the older ones come in the two materials Kentucky was built from: log and brick.
