Pre-Wiring for a Wall-Mounted TV: New Builds & Remodels

New construction and big remodels are happening all over Central Kentucky right now. New neighborhoods are filling in across Fayette County, basements are being finished in older Lexington neighborhoods, and rooms over garages are going up from Nicholasville to Georgetown. If a TV is going on any of those walls, there's a right time to plan for it — and it's while the walls are still open, not after the drywall is up.

Mounting a TV on a finished wall is never impossible, and we do it every day. But planning the wall during framing turns the three most expensive parts of a TV install — power, cable runs, and a solid mounting surface — into steps that cost almost nothing while the studs are exposed. Decide Where the TV Goes First

The plan starts with the same question we ask on every install: where will you actually sit and watch? Measure the viewing distance from the seating to the wall and use it to pick the TV size — our guide to choosing a TV size walks through the math. Mark the wall and set the mounting height with the center of the screen around eye level from your seat; for most living rooms and basement theaters, that puts the center of a typical TV around 42 inches off the floor. Then check the windows: a TV on a wall that faces a big south-facing window fights glare all afternoon no matter how good the screen is.

Add Blocking Behind the Mount

The cheapest insurance in new construction is wall blocking. A piece of 2x6 or a sheet of plywood installed between the studs at mount height gives the TV mount solid wood to bite into anywhere on the wall — not just where the studs happen to land. It costs a few dollars in lumber during framing. Without it, the mount has to land exactly on studs, or we fall back on anchors that are never quite as good as wood.

Blocking matters even more for full-motion mounts, which put a lot of leverage on the wall when the arm is extended. A mount anchored to blocking doesn't flex, no matter how often the TV gets pulled out to face the kitchen or the patio. Ask your builder to add blocking at the height you marked — it takes them a few minutes with a saw.

Put Power Where the TV Hangs

A wall-mounted TV needs power behind it, or you're running a cord down the wall. During rough-in, that means one more electrical box and a short wire run — trivial while the walls are open. On existing homes, our outlet add-on ($150) handles it: a licensed electrician adds a new outlet behind the TV, and the screen covers it once it's mounted.

When you're pre-wiring, have the outlet placed at mount height so it hides behind the screen, and leave a little extra room for the TV's plug and power brick behind the mount. Also think about where the media devices will live: a cabinet below the TV needs its own power, and the wall between the cabinet and the TV needs a path for the cables.

Run Conduit for the Cables

The step people thank us for later is conduit — a low-voltage "smurf tube" run from behind the TV down to the media area. HDMI cables change every few years, but the tube doesn't. With conduit in the wall, upgrading the cable later is a quick pull instead of opening the drywall. Have the electrician run it during rough-in and leave a pull string inside.

For antenna coax, network cable, and the HDMI run itself, in-wall-rated cable finished with a low-voltage plate keeps the wall clean and code-friendly. Plan the Sound

If a soundbar is going below the TV — our soundbar add-on is $40 with any TV installation — it needs its own power and an audio connection to the TV, usually over the same HDMI run (ARC or eARC) or an optical cable. Pre-wiring means the soundbar's outlet and cable route are already in the wall before the mount goes up.

For surround setups, in-wall speaker wire to the rear of the room is another step that's nearly free during framing and miserable after the drywall. Decide now, because speaker wire is much harder to fish through a finished wall than an HDMI cable is.

Tilting mounts add $45 at any size; full-motion mounts add $125 on 32–55-inch TVs (special order). An outlet add-on is $150, powerline $99, a soundbar $40, smart setup $35, and old TV removal $30.

What pre-wiring saves is labor and drywall repair later. The outlet, conduit, and blocking that cost a few hundred dollars during construction are exactly the parts that turn a clean install into a project once the wall is finished. Plan them early and the mount job itself stays a same-day visit.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can you mount the TV after the drywall is up?

Yes — most of our work is on finished walls. Pre-wiring just makes it cleaner and cheaper. The mounting itself is the same job with the same prices whether the wall was planned for it or not.

Who runs the electrical for the pre-wire?

During new construction, your builder's electrician handles the rough-in — an outlet at mount height and a low-voltage box or conduit are standard requests. If the walls are already closed, our outlet add-on ($150) brings in a licensed electrician to add power behind the TV as part of the install.

What if we don't know exactly where the TV will go?

Block a wider section of the wall and run the conduit to a central point. The mount location can then move anywhere within that range without rework — a small extra bit of lumber for a lot of flexibility.

Is pre-wiring worth it for a basement finish or an addition?

It's the best value in those projects, because the walls are open and the runs are short. Basement theaters, bonus rooms, and finished garages all benefit from blocking and conduit before the drywall goes up.

What about retrofitting a wall that wasn't pre-wired?

Retrofit is our everyday work: in-wall outlets, conduit where there's an accessible path, powerline where there isn't, and toggle anchors when the wall can't be opened. The result is the same — the labor is just higher.
